This is the 17th novel in the DI Hillary Greene series - and it is the final one! Each of the 17 novels are pretty much stand alone novels, and all are fabulous reading. The series must rank among the best I have read - and that is saying something. They are all simply written, with no great depth really - just good reading, easy to understand, and often have a fair smattering of humour thrown in for good measure. Now I have read the final novel in the series, I feel that I have lost some good friends! Will have to download some more Faith Martin books, and am looking forward to it. These novels do not disappoint - they are well written and well edited allowing for only a few typos that most ebooks contain. You will not be disappointed in this series.

The plot was good and engaging. Hillary got her cases solved as usual. However, the ending was a little flat. For this to be her “ final case” it left it open for a Nellie Melba swan song ... there is little in the story’s end to suggest it is the final case, other than the fact that maybe Faith has gotten tired of writing about this character and will mothball her. Maybe a more dramatic ending would have made the title more fitting. It just fizzled out at the end.

Loved the final book in the series, though I do think the author left it open for Hillary to continue on both in the cold case department and with her new beau. (Please) The whole series is an easy read, well written, with well developed characters that you come to really like, even the bad guys are well developed and you see the characters from a variety of perspectives, good, bad and ugly. Love the description of the area and countryside, makes you feel part of the scene.

Hillary Green has kept me enthralled throughout an extensive series of fighting the bad guys ( including those within her own force), ensuring justice and keeping the bosses and her closer colleagues on their toes. In the course of her career she has survived a corrupt officer husband, shonky work mates and those with obsessions and/or grudges, been shot at, knifed and assaulted in different ways. She has not only survived but flourished. So, it was nice to see her return as a consultant following a year of retirement and crisscrossing the waterways in her trusty small barge. And, pleasingly when shs has solved her last crime, she movez on with her life and into a more stable living relationship. A graceful conclusion for a top girl!!

Faith Martin's books are always a good read. Never have to think too hard to follow the story line, yet they can be riveting. And this book is no exception. DI Hilary Greene sets out to follow the usual trail of suspects and eventually decides that this will be her last Case. She needs to retire for many reasons - reasons that have been occurring during the last couple of her books. What a let down! No more DI Hilary Greene? Never mind fans, there are new events happening so that we don't quite lose our heroine yet.

Excellent finish to an excellent series. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading all the DCI Hillary Green series and am sad this is the last one.
Faith Martin, such an excellent author, has started a new series. I’ve waited to finish the Hillary Green stories before buying any of the new series. My hope is that Faiths usual excellent writing is as good, better perhaps, than her other books.
Thanks Faith for many years of very enjoyable reading.
