About the author

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.
Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire - there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!
She has been married forever, has two grown up daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. When she isn't writing Helen enjoys spending time with them.

- Reviewed in Australia on 17 January 2020Verified PurchaseStrong story lines, plenty of action with Detective Rachel King again leading the team to solve a difficult case of two murders. King's support characters are worthy of mention as they deserve if for their strong performance pushing the story line along.
- Reviewed in Australia on 14 July 2023When two dead women are found on a Manchester building site, DCI Rachel King and the team find themselves immersed in a sophisticated Romanian people-trafficking operation with another police team claiming jurisdiction. Rachel continues to make bad decisions on the fly as links with ex-lover / now crime boss Jed McAteer threaten to be exposed. Interestingly and unusually, I don’t connect with Rachel at all and I find myself here solely for the stories. Typical of Helen H Durrant, this police procedural / crime drama has some compelling busy interconnecting plots lines. But ultimately, it’s a bridging novel and the main story arcs remain unresolved - which, unsatisfyingly, is probably more reflective of real life. Voice artist Lucy Price-Lewis is a vast improvement on the previous narrator, I enjoyed everything about her performance!

- Reviewed in Australia on 4 September 2019Verified PurchaseAnother excellent book in this series. So well written, so gripping and enthralling I didn’t want the book to end.
- Reviewed in Australia on 7 August 2019This is book 2 in the DCI Rachel King series set in Manchester. We first met Rachel and her team in Next Victim which was a brilliant introduction to the series.
Rachel's domestic life adds an interesting vein to the series as does her past. Divorced (with her ex husband living next door), Rachel is trying to juggle a demanding career with the problems that come with bringing up 2 teenage girls. Megan is at university and that brings its own issues whereas Mia is still at school., suffering from Type 1 diabetes and also nearly losing her life in a kidnapping it is understandable that both Rachel and Megan are protective of her.
The book itself is fast-paced with the suspense beginning on the first page and building all the way through. There are several things going on the keep the reader totally engrossed in the story.
The body of a young woman is found in a ditch. She has been shot and while forensics are searching for clues another body is found, this one a teenage girl. To add to the issues faced by Rachel and her team the bodies are on land being developed by Jed McAteer. Jed is a loveable rogue from Rachel's university days who keeps popping up where he isn't wanted. Rachel and Jed share a secret, one that could destroy Rachel's life and career.
As the team begin investigating they uncover more wrongdoings and a DCI from another station starts to muscle in on the action. People trafficking, sex slaves and worse are all thrown into the mix. As cases become entwined can Rachel hold on to her suspect and find justice for the dead?
This is a twisty turny book that had me hooked at the very first page and kept giving all the way to the totally unexpected ending. An absolutely brilliant read. I cant wait for the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in Australia on 31 July 2019The two victims had lived totally different lives but ended up lying dead next to each other. What is their connection? This is the conundrum that DCI Rachel King and her team must discover in this fast paced, electrifying book which has enough twists to make you dizzy! I The final twist being the best of all. Helen Durrant never fails to deliver a top story. It’s too good a book to give out spoiler alerts, but it’s another of her must read books. Thanks, Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read this one.
- Reviewed in Australia on 1 August 2019This is the 2nd book in the Rachel King series. This is a fast pace read you not be disappointed. Enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good read by helen
Verified PurchaseAfter reading the first book and even though I thought it could of had a few twists in it it kept me interested so book 2 in the series is better and kept me interested if I can't get into a book by chapter 3 I don't read any more and I know I will have missed out on a few good books but that's just me. I'm now getting to know the main characters and this book made me get the last one in the series..
